Police in Greenville, Mississippi raided the parking lot of Temple Baptist Church during a drive-in prayer service and issued $500 fines to everyone in attendance – including many elderly congregants.

Pastor Arthur Scott told the Todd Starnes Radio Show that he was astonished by the actions of the police department and the mayor’s office.

“One of the police officers said the mayor wanted to make an example of our church,” the pastor said. “I told them to get some more tickets ready because we will be preaching Sunday morning and Sunday night.”

“We’ve been doing it for three weeks,” he said.

But Mayor Errick Simmons and the city council that banned churches from hosting drive-in services.

The City of Greenville put in place an Executive Order that orders all church buildings closed for in person and drive in church services, until the State of Mississippi’s Shelter In Place Executive Order No. 1466 is lifted by Governor Tate Reeves. Churches are strongly encouraged to hold services via Facebook Live, Zoom, Free Conference Call, and any and all other social media, streaming, and telephonic platforms,” the order read.

Scott, who has pastored the small church for 45 years, said that most of the congregation is elderly and they don’t have access to smartphones.

So church leaders decided to rig up a radio frequency where congregants could sit in their cars and listen as the pastor delivered the message from the pulpit. In other words, the church was in compliance with social distancing rules.

“The police officer said I might go to jail,” the elderly pastor said on the radio show. “If it means going to jail and if it takes that for me to keep preaching, I’ll be glad to go to jail.”

The pastor said as many as 25 cars were in the parking lot for the service and everyone was ticketed.

Video shows police officers disrupting the service by knocking on the doors of every car. Church members were ordered to turn over their driver’s licenses. They were then issued a fine and a court summons.

“I just can’t believe it,” the pastor told me. “I tried to talk to the mayor. I’ve been here 45 years and I’ve never been to the city council. I’ve never complained. I’ve never stirred up a stink. But I told him I’m going to fight them on this.”

A black, pro-life lawmaker who supported school vouchers has been expelled from the Tennessee Democratic Party’s upcoming primary.

State Rep. John DeBerry, who was elected to serve the Memphis area in 1994, was ousted by the party’s executive committee on Wednesday and his name will not appear on the ballot.

“After a long meeting in which we heard challenges and evidence, we did what we thought was best to protect the Tennessee Democratic Party and the values we stand for,” Tennessee Democratic Party chair Mary Mancini said in a statement.

The executive committee did not reveal what evidence they had or what the challenges might have been with the well-respected lawmaker.

However, last year he was targeted by Planned Parenthood because of his opposition to abortion. And they also took issue with his support for school vouchers.

“I that that it is repulsive for a representative that is suppose to represent the will of the majority of his constituents to stand the way that Representative DeBerry stood,” Dr. Earle Fischer told Memphis television station WREG.

DeBerry is a Church of Christ minister and has long been opposed to killing unborn children.

“The Tennessee Democratic Party has decided that a 26-year Representative that spent 12 years as a committee chairman, conducted himself with integrity, served the party well, sponsored meaningful legislation and built bridges across the aisle to get bills passed is no longer a Democrat. And so, I’m not,” he said.

DeBerry was one of four Tennessee Democrats who voted in favor of a bill to ban abortions after six week weeks of pregnancy.

“I choose my battles, and I choose to give girls self esteem, self worth, to where they don’t feel that their bodies are just a vessel for somebody to play with and they don’t get themselves in that position,” DeBerry told the Commercial Appeal. “I think that’s what’s being lost. Personal responsibility, pride, self esteem — it makes a person walk away from those situations that get them in this position. Because the woman ultimately has to bear the burden,” he said. “The man walks away. The woman has to deal with it for the next nine months.”

DeBerry enjoys massive support among voters in his Memphis district and a fellow Democrat lawmaker wondered if something else was afoot.

“As an African American male, I am detecting a sinister plot for the credential challenge of Rep. DeBerry,” State Rep. Joe Towns told the Daily Memphian.

Towns told the newspaper that abortion and school vouchers are not litmus tests to be a Democrat.

“Let me emphasize that the overwhelming majority of the African American community has vetted John and found him not to be lacking and more than sufficient in Democratic values that reflect his district and the black community at large,” Towns said.

Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., told the “Todd Starnes Radio Show” Wednesday that it is essential that the U.S. holds China’s feet to the fire over the coronavirus outbreak.

Blackburn has been one of the most critical voices in the Senate about China and has proposed a bill that would bring back pharmaceutical manufacturing to the U.S.

“So basically what has happened is that China took all our jobs and they sent back to us a virus,” she said.

Blackburn said that there is evidence that Beijing knew about the virus outbreak in Wuhan for 51 days before issuing an alert. Many Republicans claim that precious time was lost that could have been devoted to preparing for the virus.

The U.S. is still skeptical of death-toll reports from Beijing and takes the data at face value. It has been widely reported that the CIA is working through spies to get a more accurate read on the true death toll from the country.

“China needs to pay for this,” Blackburn said. “They need to admit that this was their mistake.”

She said she has a resolution that would declare that the U.S. Senate recognizes that China “started this; then they lied about it; then they weren’t transparent.”

China has been criticized from the virus’ onset in the Hubei province city of Wuhan.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has been one of the most vocal critics of China’s response to the outbreak.  Last month, he said that Beijing “created a disinformation campaign” during the early stages of the virus, which resulted in its spread.

“They haven’t been sufficiently transparent and the risk you find, if we don’t get this right, if we don’t get to the bottom of this, is this could be something that is repeatable,” Pompeo said in March. “Maybe not in this form, maybe not in this way, but transparency matters.”

Blackburn has said Americans are raising concerns after China said it may withhold effective medications from the U.S. in the fight against the virus. She said many Americans are unhappy with reports that Beijing withheld pertinent information about the virus in its early stages and its decision to be “less than transparent” on where the virus originated.

“We have been disappointed in what we’ve seen from China,” she said. “And now we have a global pandemic.”

THE MIGHTY 990 KWAM is offering small businesses across Memphis a free week of advertising. It’s just one significant way the news and talk radio station is lending a helping hand to the community during the global pandemic.

“We’ve covered the stories of neighbors and small businesses in this community sacrificing to help in this fight against our invisible enemy,” Starnes Media Group CEO Dalton Glasscock said. “These people, their businesses’ and their stories, have inspired us to do what we can, to help them and other businesses that need an extra hand during this time.”

THE MIGHTY 990 KWAM has been broadcasting in the Mid-South for more than 74 years and has a long history of standing alongside the community in difficult days.

And while many radio conglomerates around the nation are laying off and furloughing workers, Starnes Media Group has doubled down on its commitment to employees. Both the chief executive officer and the president of Starnes Media Group are not taking a salary during the pandemic.

The stay-at-home orders have also made it impossible for people to attend their local houses of worship so THE MIGHTY 990 offered local churches free air-time on Sundays to broadcast their services.

“The Mid-South has a history of resiliency, a heart of hospitality, and a drive that rivals every community in this station. We will get through this, together, and when we can meet again our community will be even mightier,” Glasscock said.

Over a dozen churches in Shelby County, Tenn., have allegedly violated the state’s ‘safer-at-home’ orders as a “nonessential business” WREG reported.

The county, which encompasses the city of Memphis, ruled last week that churches cannot operate if they have more than 10 people in attendance. If a church disobeys the order, it can be fined.

The county discovered on Sunday that these churches were not in compliance when health officials investigated.

Dr. Bruce Randolph, a health officer from Shelby County, told the news station that the county is “treating churches just as we’re treating all other essential businesses.”

Randolph said one estimate said the county could see 20,000 deaths if these orders are not followed. The Daily Memphian reported that since the orders were put into place, the county has seen a 45% drop in travel.

“That’s good, but not good enough,” David Sweat, the county epidemiologist, said. He said the measures will not be considered effective until traffic is down 60 percent.

The fight between churches and health officials have been playing out in public across the country.

President Trump and his coronavirus task force have warned that the next two weeks may be among the darkest in the country’s history. The U.S. had 387, 547 confirmed cases by Tuesday afternoon and recorded over 12,000 deaths. New York City has been seen as the country’s epicenter with 4,000 deaths.

Trump has tried to strike an optimistic tone.

“Stay inside and let’s win this and let’s get our country as soon as we can. I think it’s going to be sooner than people think. Things are going really well,” Trump said at a Monday press conference.

Health officials insist that pastors who disregard these orders are putting lives at risk, while religious leaders say it is in times of crisis that people turn to their faith more than ever.

Pastor Ricky Floyd of the Pursuit of God Church told WREG that he has been streaming his services since the orders came down and has been criticized for the move.

“No way you could have ever told me that the biggest fight in the church would be whether you should have your church open or closed, and…I’ve lost relationships because people have voiced strong opinions,” he told the station.

The crackdown happens to be occurring right as Easter Sunday is approaching. Bishop Phoebe Roaf, the head of the Episcopal Diocese of West Tennessee, told ActionNews5 that even though Easter may look different, the sentiment remains.

“God is not confined to a building. And while faith communities aren’t able to worship together in person, the way we have the mission of God has not changed. Prayer has not changed, and all of the values of God, the values of compassion, the values of humility, the values of generosity, those are things that we need now more than ever,” Roaf said.

Hobby Lobby announced that all of their stores will close tonight and will remain closed until further notice due to the COVID-19 virus. Nearly all of their employees will be furloughed – including in the Mid-South.

The decision to close came after a judge in Dallas County, Texas issued an order to close all local Hobby Lobby stores. Judge Clay Jenkins ruled the stores were nonessential during the pandemic.

“It does not appear that Hobby Lobby meets the criteria in the order,” Jenkins said in the letter to Hobby Lobby’s general counsel Peter Dobelbower. “Our county is facing unprecedented challenges now, and we want to ensure that you are aware of the obligations placed on you.”

Craft store customers in Dallas County found their local stores were closed Friday after Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins ordered them to on Thursday.

Jenkins said in a letter to Hobby Lobby that the retail category falls under nonessential businesses of the county’s order issued March 22 regarding the coronavirus pandemic.

Here’s the company’s statement:

In order to allow our furloughed employees to take full advantage of the Pandemic Unemployment Compensation and Recovery Rebates provided to eligible employees by the federal government, we are ending emergency leave pay and suspending use of Company provided paid time off benefits (PPTO and Vacation) in accordance with the requirements outlined in the CARES Act (subject to State law requirements).  However, we will maintain medical, dental, life, and long-term disability benefits for employees while furloughed through at least May 1, 2020, and will pay the cost of employee premiums for these benefits on behalf of employees while furloughed without pay.  We encourage furloughed employees to file their claims with their State’s unemployment commissions as soon as possible.  Upon return, employees will retain their original dates of hire and any accrued PPTO and Vacation.  Our sincere gratitude goes out to our dedicated employees at this difficult time, and we look forward to the day when we can welcome them back, once we are able to reopen.

We know our customers relied on us to provide essential products, including materials to make personal protective equipment, such as face masks, educational supplies for the countless parents who are now educating their children from home, and the thousands of small arts and crafts businesses who rely on us for supplies to make their products.  Over the past several weeks, we implemented several best practices to provide a safer shopping environment, including the installation of physical barriers between customers and cashiers, enhanced cleaning, and the enforcement of social distancing measures.  We are prepared to reopen our stores in a responsible way when the current situation improves, and look forward to welcoming our valued customers back to our stores.  Until then, we pray for those affected by the virus, protection for the health care.

Gov. Bill Lee, the Tennessee Republican, signed an executive order Thursday that calls for residents to stay home– with the exception of essential activities– as the state and its neighbors prepare for a surge in coronavirus cases.

NYC CARDIAC PATIENTS WITHOUT PULSE WILL NOT BE TRANSPORTED TO HOSPITAL

Lee said in a statement that he was forced to issue the order because in recent days data indicated that “movement may be increasing” in his state.

“I have updated my previous executive order to clearly require that Tennesseans stay at home unless they are carrying out essential activities,” his statement read, according to WREG.

Essential businesses include pharmacies, gas stations and medical facilities.

Tennessee has reported 2,845 coronavirus cases of the new and 32 deaths as of Thursday. WREG reported that 220 people there have recovered.

“April stands to be a very tough month for our state,” Lee said, according to the Commercial Appeal. “COVID-19 is an imminent threat and we need you to understand that staying home isn’t an option. It’s a requirement for the swift defeat of COVID-19 in Tennessee.”

WREG reported that a second worker at a Kroger Distribution Center in Memphis has been diagnosed with the disease.

“We will continue aggressively cleaning and sanitizing the facility,” Teresa Dickerson, corporate affairs manager for the company, told the station. “Before entering the building, each associate has their temperature checked as we take additional precautions to keep our associates safe.”

GEORGIA

On Friday, Georgia residents will be under a statewide shelter-in-place order. The state has seen 163 deaths and 5,348 confirmed cases.

Gov. Brian Kemp, the Republican, said the shelter-in-place order will continue through April 13. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that the order calls for the closure of gyms, bowling alleys and movie theaters.

He worked to assure residents that the state will be able to meet supply goals.

“If we have to, we will put the National Guard and the Georgia State Patrol to get groceries and supplies to keep our families fed, and to keep the medicines flowing, to get healthcare equipment coming to our state,” he said, according to the paper.

MISSISSIPPI

Mississippi reportedly has the highest COVID-19 hospitalization rate in the country, Mississippi Today reported. As of Wednesday, there have been 26 deaths and 333 patients hospitalized with the virus. About 1,073 people have been infected. That marks a  31 percent hospitalization rate. Newsweek pointed out that the rate is higher than New York’s 22 percent rate.

The state, like many others, has also reported troubling employment numbers. Action News 5 reported Thursday that 30,000 Mississippians filed for unemployment, which is 30 times the amount from two weeks ago.

The new coronavirus is sweeping through the country and in many cases upending our way of life. There have been a total of 242,000 confirmed cases in the U.S. as of Thursday evening and 5,850 deaths. New York City has recorded 1,397 deaths there alone.

“Make no mistake, Gov. Tate Reeves, the Mississippi Republican, said. “This is not only a public health disaster, this is also an economic disaster in Mississippi and this nation.”

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee signed an executive order requiring every citizen to stay home unless they are carrying out essential activities. The governor also revealed they are tracking the movements of citizens within the state.

“Over the last few weeks, we have seen decreases in movement around the state as Tennesseans socially distance and stay at home,” said Gov. Lee. “However, in recent days we have seen data indicating that movement may be increasing and we must get these numbers trending back down. I have updated my previous executive order to clearly require that Tennesseans stay at home unless they are carrying out essential activities.”

Data from the Tennessee Department of Transportation analyzed traffic patterns for March 2020. While safer at home measures and further restrictions on businesses showed a steep drop-off in vehicle movement from March 13-29, data beginning on March 30 indicates travel is trending upwards, again.

The Administration also analyzed data from Unacast to understand cell phone mobility and determine movement trends among people. Unacast indicates the movement of Tennesseans is trending toward pre-COVID-19 levels.

“The month of April stands to be an extremely tough time for our state as we face the potential for a surge in COVID-19 cases,” said Lee. “Every Tennessean must take this seriously, remain at home and ensure we save lives.”

The executive order remains in effect until April 14, 2020.

Ammunition is becoming such a hot item, it has been difficult keeping the shelves stocked due to the demand, a Wisconsin gun store owner said.

It has been widely reported that gun stores across the U.S. have seen a major jump in sales during the coronavirus outbreak. Surges in firearms sales are not unusual during times of crisis and many Second Amendment activists worry about government overreach.

Reports say that FBI background checks were up 300 percent on March 16 compared to a year ago.

Jesse Cartwright, the owner of Cartwright’s Guns and Ammo in Dodgeville, Wis., told WISC-TV that retailers are beginning to see an ammo shortage, similar to what we’ve seen with toilet paper.

“I’ve had to change the way I’ve ordered,” he told the station. “One of the most drastic changes is I’m now looking for what my distributor has available for ammunition and then I’m buying a gun from a different distributor that shoots that type of ammunition instead of just buying the most popular models that customers are looking for.”

He said his store has seen a 400 percent jump in sales in the past few weeks. He said the only other challenge that he has is keeping customers six feet apart.

“We just ask customers to wait outside,” he said.

Donald Trump Jr., a Second Amendment advocate, took to Twitter last month to talk about the increase in gun sales.

“The irony of it all is that it’s my Democrat friends reaching out to me now asking me which guns they should buy just in case,” he tweeted. “In particular which ARs. I guess they’re OK with the 2A now?? You don’t need it, till you need it.”

The Trump administration on Monday ruled that gun stores are essential businesses and should remain open during the outbreak, prompting gun-control groups to vow a challenge. The Brady group filed a Freedom of Information request in hopes to obtain emails on the decision process.

“It’s a public health issue, not a Second Amendment issue,” Jonathan Lowy, the chief counsel told Time. “The fact is that guns, the nature of guns, require that they be sold with a lot of close interaction. They can’t be sold from vending machines, can’t be sold with curbside pickup.”s
